Selous Game Reserve (Now Nyerere National Park)

Untamed Wilderness in Southern Tanzania

Overview:

Formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is one of Africa’s largest and most diverse protected areas, spanning over 30,000 km². Located in southern Tanzania, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its untouched landscapes, abundant wildlife, and varied safari experiences, offering a more exclusive and less crowded alternative to northern parks such as the Serengeti or Ngorongoro.

Named in honour of the famed conservationist Frederick Selous, the reserve is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers, and photographers alike.

Key Highlights:

  • 🐘 Abundant Wildlife: Home to elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, buffaloes, crocodiles, hippos, hyenas, and the endangered African wild dog.

  • 🛶 Boat Safaris on the Rufiji River: A unique way to view hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife from the water—something not common in most parks.

  • 🚶‍♂️ Walking Safaris: Guided bush walks offer a close and thrilling perspective of the wild.

  • 🚙 Classic Game Drives: Explore open plains, woodlands, and riverbanks teeming with life.

  • 🐦 Birding Paradise: Over 440 bird species recorded, including bee-eaters, fish eagles, and kingfishers.

Best Time to Visit:

June to October – Dry season is best for game viewing as animals congregate around water sources.
November to March – Green season, ideal for birding and fewer crowds.

Getting There:

  • Easily accessible by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, or Arusha.

  • Road access is possible but less common due to the park’s remote location.

Perfect For:
